History
The idea of a Refugee Olympic Team was first proposed by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) in 2015 as a way to bring attention to the global refugee crisis and provide hope and inspiration to displaced individuals. The team made its debut at the 2016 Rio Olympics, with 10 athletes representing various countries including Syria, South Sudan, Ethiopia, and the Democratic Republic of the Congo.
Selection Process
Athletes are selected to the Refugee Olympic Team based on their sporting ability, personal circumstances, and status as a refugee. The IOC works closely with the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) and National Olympic Committees to identify and support potential candidates.

Since its inception, the Refugee Olympic Team has grown in size and scope, with more athletes participating in each successive Olympic Games. In the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, the team consisted of 29 athletes from 11 countries, competing in a wide range of sports including athletics, swimming, and judo.
