Yonkes means: Yonkes, a informal Spanish slang word that refers to junk or junk-yards, is an informal Spanish slang term. Yonkes is NOT a reference to Yonkees, as many monolingual English speakers mistakenly believe. Chicano Park, San Diego, CA, is the iconic location for this word. It’s attributed to a mural from civil rights era that said “Varrio Si Yonkes No”. It means “yes to community but no junk-yards”.
