schnitting means: An archaeological term that describes the process of digging a hole in a rectangular area with a shovel. A lot of dirt can be removed from one location if schnitting is done properly. You can then sift the material (or “schnitt”) that has been removed using a fine screen. The screen can be used to remove any schnitt left in the artifacts, which could include pot sherds or coprolite petrified sh*t. (in Community Dictionary, added by Teagan Krause)
