What is a Spat?
When it comes to relationships, conflicts are bound to happen. But sometimes these conflicts escalate into what is known as a ‘spat’. A spat is a minor argument or dispute between two people, often over a trivial matter.
Characteristics of a Spat
- Short duration
- Low intensity
- Focused on a specific issue
Examples of Spats
For example, a couple might have a spat over where to go for dinner, or friends might have a spat over what movie to watch. These disagreements are usually resolved quickly and do not have a lasting impact on the relationship.
Case Studies
A study conducted by researchers at Harvard University found that spats are a common occurrence in relationships, but are typically not indicative of larger problems. In fact, couples who are able to navigate through spats successfully often report feeling closer and more connected to each other.
Statistics on Spats
According to a survey by the National Institute of Mental Health, the average person has about 7 spats per month. However, only about 10% of these spats escalate into more serious conflicts.
